So You Stumbled Upon My Blog

Hello Dear Blog Readers!

So you stumbled across my blog. I don't know what brought you here or why you have decided to read this but I certainly am happy that you are taking the time from your day to read my ramblings.

My name is Emily and I am a theater technician who works around Florida and soon New York! Sounds very exciting - or very boring depending on your view of theater - but I am here to tell you that for me it is neither exciting nor boring. It is the best possible thing that could have ever happened to me. Finding out that teching for dance companies and theater troupes can be my actual career has been absolutely amazing. The people who I work with have been fantastic and the people that I have met doing this job are so friendly it's amazing.

Before I began working as a technician in my area I held jobs that often times made me want to curl up and never go outside again. My first job was as a janitor which was about as fun as it sounds. After that I worked for a pizzeria and a coffee shop. Needless to say none of these jobs that could very well be wonderful for someone else, made me feel very good and I eventually walked away from them all - usually due to a conflict in my schedule because of something I was doing that was related to - you guessed it - the theater.

After I decided that it was no use trying to live my life in the 9 to 5 manner, I had to figure out how to make money and keep myself happy as well. I've always figured that being happy is one of the most important things in life and it's often times overlooked for financial stability. And I wasn't ready to throw away my life on a degree that I didn't love. So I switched my major to Technical Theater Production - which was a fight that I didn't expect to have - and I took life into my own hands and did what made me happy.

I'm not going to sit here and tell you that this job is super easy but I will say that it is super rewarding. I never really know when my next paycheck is coming and I never know if my next job will be one that I like but at the end of the day when I come home exhausted and sore from whatever the directors have thrown at me that day, I always realize that I have never been happier with life than in those moments. Theater is what I love and I don't want to do anything else.

So this blog will be all about my experiences as a professional theater technician. Some may find that boring but I hope that some of you will stick around and bare with me and let me get to know you as you get to know me. I'm here for all the theater people out there who get told that they will be throwing their lives away if they pursue their dreams. That's a lie. You will never throw your life away so long as you are happy. Never let anyone get in the way of your dreams and your aspirations.

Until next time, my lovely techies.
